JumpStart Morning

I was eager to take up the new work which came in my way last night and headed toward my office. Once I reached, I found that the server on which I had attempted had some issues with the quota. The error looks as follows

root@server [/]# quota -s username
quota: Can’t stat() mounted device /dev/hda5: No such file or directory

I did shoot the fixes which we can apply on the server to get the issue resolved. But, I found that all those basics steps were executed on the server and it fell in my escalation list.

Here starts the scary story of the day.

I found that none of the block device files related to hda and hdb were found under /dev. I thought it might be due to the kernel and udev issue which I was facing during the upgrade. reconfirmed all the packages and initated a call to the Data Center to see if they can be there infront of the console to take care if things go wrong. (Remember? I didn’t speak of rebooting the server while talking about CentOS 3.9 to 4.6 upgrade.). Thought of creating the block device files myself and started looking into google search results to see if any one else have already done that or not.

All I wanted is to reboot the server to get the /dev file system recreated. So, took a final call. Kept my fingers crossed while the server was rebooted at the DC. I was damn lucky to find that server coming back online pretty fast. Even quota issue got resolved automatically. Wow! I’m back to normal mode now.

You too have a great day!
