Something made me look into the new version of uvcvideo today. I’m not able to recall the exact link which reffered me to look into it. Might be some email update which stated that uvcvideo now supports more than 100 Cameras.
But, I have been facing some issues with the Cheese application on my Ubuntu installation which was upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10. My camera had stopped working with the above mentioned application. I also found that there was a bug filed already with Ubuntu team and they are working on the issue to get it sorted out.
I couldn’t wait for them to resolve the issue, hence I downloaded a fresh version of uvcvideo, manually compiled and installed it and thats it. My camera as well as Cheese application both started working.
Download your copy of uvcvideo today from here.

I just installed uvcvideo on my Dell Inspiron laptop and cheese started working. I had discussed this problem with Shiv sir and he promised me that he would come with the solution. Today I have my webcam working with Ubuntu 8.10
The steps are as smooth as cheese
Download the uvcvideo tarball from the link given in the blog. After that go inside the directory and type #make all after that #make install
Thats it. Isn’t it smooth as cheese?
No it is not smooth at all!!
Why don’t they publish a regular update?? With the update manager I mean!!
I’ve been using Ubuntu 8.10 since the RC and they haven’t changed anything, it’s still the same issue with uvcvideo!!
Hi Gora,
Yes, they haven’t done that work yet. I really didn’t like 8.10 release as there were many challenges to a novice while working with his system. Wish Canonical looks into this matter.
In fact is solved from mid-november, just waiting to hit the update repos.

I had installed UBUNTU 8.10 and am unable to get information on what softwares are needed to make the ‘intex night vision camera model IT-305WC’ WORK ON THE SAME. SOME SAYS \GSPCA AND CHEESE’,
ANOTHER SAYS ;VCVIDEO AND CHEESE’ AND SO ON. I HAD ADDED CHEESE TO THE SYSTEM AND I AM NOT SURE, IF VCVIDEO WILL HELP!!. IF IT WILL WORK, THEN HOW TO GO ABOUT INSTALLING ( COMMANDS LINES TO EXECUTE) THE SAME ON MY PC?//
your REPLY WOULD BE OF GREAT HELP.
thanking YOU,
Get Ubuntu upgraded to 9.04 where in Uvcvideo works just great and that should solve the problem. Before installing you can even try using it over a liveCD itself. Otherwise you can download and compile the uvcvideo from source. Find the read me to know how-to go about it.
