Today after installing Ubuntu on Lenovo, I thought of checking flash player plug-in. So, I visited https://in.youtube.com to see some clips. But it took me by surprise to see only porn clips on the whole page of “Video” section. This is worst than many more porn sites which were banned and which are still available under the cover. Don’t we have any moderation for such content? Some filters might be missing on Youtube India. Or is it a publicity gimmick.
Today youth is attracted towards “new media” which enables them to express themselves across the globe in many ways easily. At the same time its being misused and broadcasting nusense.
At the other end, I attended a talk by historian, Prof. Eben Moglen during the weekend on “Free Software for New Media”. He spoke about Free software, Internet, Media and their future etc while throwing light on up coming challenges for the media due to technological advancements. He even explained beautifully how he used the technology to build the collaborative environment among his students while teach in Universities. The examples quoted by him helps us to understand an another mindset of people who looked at the technology as a media to spread the knowledge.
Take an another example, Twitter. A micro blogging site which as used during Mumbai bomb blast to spread the updates on attacks via mobiles and other hand held devices.
As technology advances, as new innovations reaches the hands of common people new challenges and responsibility will fall on the shoulders of people who create the same. Also people who use it should also share the responsibility of using technology for the good and not for mass disruption.
Decide what you really want to broadcast to the society via new media. Its in your hands…
