I know that every one is waiting for Ubuntu Karmic Koala release. Just two more days to go….
Check this image that I have added here. Reliance Broadband+ Huawei EC1260 device internal memory device (detected as cdrom drive) and MMC card attached to the device both are detected without any configuration changes. It started working since I upgraded 9.04 to Karmic alpha release which came with 2.6.3x kernel. Good isn’t it?
Oh yes, Its easy to configure Reliance Broadband+ on Ubuntu 9.10 or Karmic Koala. No more wvdial configuration required. Find the Mobile Broadband devices getting detected in NetworkManager. Add username and passwords to get going live with 3G networks.
Comment on this post if you face any issues while working with it.

Hi,
I see you use a Huawei EC1260, do you have anyidea if it would work for ZTE devices as well?
Thanxs,
Animesh
I used to use a ZTE card earlier. Haven’t tested any other recently. There should not be any problem with that too. Will try if I can catch any of those Reliance guys to plug their test devices on to my laptop and update
Hi, I installed 9.10 and Reliance Netconnect just doesnt work now. How to fix this?
Hi Suyog,
How you’re trying to get connected to Reliance Broadband? Please explain.
Hi TechFiz,
I had the same problem too. I just installed karmic koala, and my netconnect broadband datacard just doesn’t connect anymore. it worked absolutely fine in jaunty. I’ve downgraded back to jaunty for the moment, to be able to surf the net!
I’m using the default gui way – via network manager. It detects the datacard automatically, i just fill in the number for username & password. Is this some kernel issue or what? Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dhruv.
Which datacard you’re using?
Edit your broadband connection in NetworkManager, Enter PPP Settings tab, disable “Use Point-to-Point Encryption (MPPE)” option and you should be good to go.
Regards,
Techfiz
I’m using the Huawei EC1260.
That option was disabled by default.
*sigh* i’m missing out on all the karmic fun
@suyog,
I just read your bug submission on launchpad
Have u found any fix for the problem?
Do lsusb and find the device and its vendor and device id
then try this command (replace vendor and id)
#sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0×451 id=0×3410
Once this is done, try connecting to the network.
if it works then you might want to add this line to /etc/modules (without modprobe)
usbserial vendor=0×451 id=0×3410
Let me know how it goes.
Hi I tried the modprobe comand with the other text but it said a FATAL message. The rest of the message is at the bottom.
FATAL: Error inserting usbserial (/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/usbserial.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
Im going to ask #ubuntu to help me configure. Please help me too!
Im using ZTE-AC8710.
I’m still a noob when it comes to linux,
but isn’t modprobe used when my system doesn’t recognize the device i wish to add to the kernel modules??
btw, my device was getting detected as both usb datacard & cd-drive, unlike in jaunty where it detects only the datacard.
i tried out modprobe on the live system, yielding no results
in fact, it ended up removing the data-card from the network manager UI. ?!
any more ideas please??
@Dhruv, I still cant use Reliance Netconnect in 9.10.
I tried using gnome-ppp but no luck there as well.
And you must have seen from bug report, issue has started since they have enabled cd drive for such type of data card, this happens when you use in windows also.
I am really surprised to see that how to they didnt fix such critical bug before release. What are they doing?
And the bug was identified almost month before final release.
Guys, Netconnect is working just fine on my laptop with Ubuntu 9.10. No idea what exactly we are missing here. I will testing on a new system and post again about the same.
I’m not giving up just yet
will be installing karmic in virtualbox tonight & then try to connect thru wvdial. will post my results soon..
@Techfiz, this is known issue and bug has already been reported. something related to cd drive, memory storage services of USB modem which was not in earlier versions.
Using modprobe is allows wvdial to work but just crashes system after few seconds, hence its not at all good.
@dhruv, i used workaround, insert usb modem then eject cd drive, mass storage shown for USB modem. Then use gnome-ppp to dial. Install it via terminal apt-get install gnome-ppp
check this link also but dont try. Use Gnome-ppp dialer.

well ok,
i’m giving up then
screw anil ambani!
@Dhruv , Why are you giving up? You can connect with ppp.
Also here Ubuntu developers have screwed now Anil Ambani.
How can they leave out such bugs related to network manager.
I meant “not” anil ambani.
Well yes you’re right, the dev team is to blame here.
But till that bug isn’t ironed out i don’t wanna overhaul my system(once more)
Will try it out on virtualbox till then
Thanks for all the help suyog.
@Dhruv, so you are back in 9.04? I was also thinking of same but anyways I will wait for some more time. There are few more issues with Bluetooth and services. 9.10 is just not upto mark.
Good news !!! Issue has been fixed by latest updates.
I am able to just plugin and use Reliance Netconnect modem.
No need to unmount, eject CD drive of modem.
So now both things work perfectly.
Great to hear that Suyog
wow, that is great news!
i am on 9.04 right now
i would love to upgrade, but i’m happier on a stable system
@suyog, Can I download the updates on a window machine and update ubuntu 9.10 on another machine?
@Tanmay, I dont think you can do that as we dont know what has really fixed that bug.
Well you can do workaround as explained by ejecting sd storage/cd drive then use gnome-ppp or vwdial
connect to net and then update. Once updates are over you can just restart and use modem as normal without doing anything else, just plug n play !!!
Let me know if you still need help.
@techviz: Hi, its works for me. I use Acer Aspire 4520 and Option modem. Thanx!
Hey , its broken again. I guess new updates messed up.
Its so horrible, What the developers are doing?
Someone should put their hands up and fix this, dont play around with normal users.
I think i’m gonna go straight for 10.04 now
Hi,
I am using the old EC168c USB modem (white color). Just made a fresh install of 9.10 . N/w manager detects my modem correctly but fails to connect when i try to activate the connection
.
I was using wvdial to connect to the internet in 8.10 . just found out that wvdial has been taken out of the default roster in 9.10 .
No internet No wvdial . No wvdial No internet :X
Is there any way out ?
i have upgraded 9.04 to 9.10 and now ec1246 is not connecting there. whats the problem there? help?
9.10 Network manager is very buggy, and surprising thing is that they knew it in Beta but never fixed and now almost 1 month after release also no solution. why developers are sleeping?
@david you need to connect via mobile or wired connection. 9.10 has really damaged reputation of ubuntu.with wvdial many apps dont detect internet connection.
Hey its not working for me… what to do… just install 9.10 and gave the username password to the network managers but showing no connection
please help me out… i’m loosing my patience…
thanks
tilak
i am using this reeliance datacard..i can surf the net but cant get pidgin working with ubuntu 9.10
please help…
My reliance net connect ZTE mg880 cdma1x is not recognised by ubuntu9.10. can any one help? I am fairly new to Linux.
Do paste the output that you see in /var/log/messages after inserting the card into usb slot. (use pastebin instead of putting up all data here)
Hi Shreya, whats the error that you get while working with Pidgin? Please elaborate your question so that we can help you further with it.
Hi Tilak, please check and confirm that you have setup the account as mentionedin my blog post and update if you’re continuing to face the problem.
TechFiz,
As I told you I am new to Ubuntu. So I expect you will give me a little more explanation. I inserted the card, went to terminal windows & typed var/log/messages. I got this:
shandilya@shandilya-laptop:~$ /var/log/messages
bash: /var/log/messages: Permission denied
I request you to please explain me:(use pastebin instead of putting up all data here)

your help is much required here will be gr8ful if you can lend some
thank you and regards
bhargav
Hi Bhargav,
Which version of Ubuntu you’re running? and also did you try using wvdial? I have blogged about wvdial configuration on my blog.. have a check on this. Ubuntu 9.10 works fine for Reliance netconnect through its NetworkManager.
Akshay, Do you get disconnected while trying to get connected via Network manager? Do you see the device getting detected fine in dmesg output (try it in console while you plug your device in)
I am facing problem with connecting through Reliance Netconnect EC1260 device. It was working fine few days back. But now it detects the modem and shows the connection in the list of connections available. When i try to connect to it it waits for sometime and then shows “Network Disconnected”. This happens everytime. I even tried deleting the existing connection and again creating a new connection but of no use. What may be the problem? I am using Ubuntu 9.10
Try using wvdial when network manager doesn’t work.. You can also try restarting network manager and then continue using the device.. wvdial just does the trick for me in these situations.
