PhotoRec for data recovery on Gnu/Linux

Last weekend I attended couple of  Free Software events where in met the founder of Free Software Foundation Richard Stallman and Historian Prof. Eben moglen. But somehow I lost few images which I had taken. I did remember clearing up my camera memory card during the evening session after copying the files to my USB drive. So, its time to recover the files which I had deleted from the drive. Do you think its possible? No?

You can to think twice as you might recover few files possibly. Check out this tool called PhotoRec which accompanies TestDisk tool on your Linux box and helps you with data recovery.

PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (thus, its ‘Photo Recovery’ name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media’s filesystem has been severely damaged or re-formatted.

TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

So don’t panic when you loose the partitions and data. Try recover.  PS. You need lots of patiance while working with this. Otherwise keep the drive away for while until you chill out.
