This year is declared as The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) by UN and is a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture and also marks the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilee. The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science under the central theme “The Universe, Yours to Discover“. IYA2009 events and activities will promote a greater appreciation of the inspirational aspects of astronomy that embody an invaluable shared resource for all nations.
ABAA has been involved in popularizing Astronomy in many ways for past 33 years. In ABAA we help people in making their own telescopes, have regular talks and discussions on various topics in Astronomy. ABAA conducts sky shows to public every first Sunday of the month, members of ABAA are taken to dark skies out of city light for deep sky observations. During events like Eclipse, Transit, Occultations and comets ABAA organizes public viewing through our telescopes.
ABAA members also take astrophotos, latest is the comet Lunil that was close to Earth on Feb 24th. Here is a link that one of our member made of movement of Comet Lulin.
ABAA has organized IYA2009 inauguration in Jawaharlal Nehru planatorium, Bangalore on 22nd March at 5:30PM. Don’t miss it. For more information mail to abaa.org
