Yes, a Greek group had hacked into the facility and displayed a page with the headline “GST: Greek Security Team.” on cmsmon.cern.ch – This website is no longer available for public. Following picture shows the defaced CMS index page. Telegraph reports this indecent in detail here.

“There seems to be no harm done. From what they can tell, it was someone making the point that CMS was hackable,” said James Gillies, spokesman for Cern. “It was quickly detected.”

He also adds the following to assure that there have been different layers of security governing the LHC core machines:

“We have several levels of network, a general access network and a much tighter network for sensitive things that operate the LHC,”

Despite endless reassurances from the likes of Prof Stephen Hawking to the speculation, that the machine could trigger a black hole to swallow the earth, or earthquakes and tsunamis, many individuals were found to be sending threat calls and emails to the scientists working at CERN.This hack adds on to that.

Looks like people have been following the tools used on CERN websites for a long time now as its one of the famous websites providing public updates on ongoing scientific research. As CERN itself confirms that 1.4 million emails sent to CERN yesterday, and 98 per cent of them were found to be spam.

The website currently hacked by this Greek security group was said to have acted as one of four “eyes” of CERN facility analyzing the Big Bang experiment. Only one file was found to have been edited by the group and the attack was not that severe.

Mean while gigantic machine has been running all this time making significant achievements irrespective of this hack attempt and other treats sent out by a group of people.
