wpToGo – Andriod app

From the day I bought my htc tatto, I’m living with real mobility. Life has become more sophisticated. Today I installed an application called wpToGo on my HTC Android phone and typing this blog post while waiting for my car to be serviced. Cool. I can just click on submit to post the article or even save it for the later stage ad draft.

I had never thought of a day such as this. I can work from anywhere and do anything on the net that you could think of.

Hmm ultimately this is an invasion on free time that we used to steal for ourselves in a routine day life. Though we get to think and do more and utilize time in a betterway….. blah blah blah.. hey wait…. I’m just thinking and typing what’s coming into my mind.. this is good… I did write something which came to my mind. I had not done this for a while now…. lol…

It’s time to post this now ;)

Simply Exclude WordPress Plugin

Many of you might be wondering why I started posting Kannada blog posts here on Platonic. Sorry about that. I was just playing around with my blog to see how I can keep a copy of my Kannada posts here on a separate page. But it took a while to find quick solutions.

Anyways, now you need not worry much about it. You continue reading all my english posts as usual. For Kannada posts click on “ಕನ್ನಡ” link that you can see on the blog. Also note that these Kannada posts won’t be appearing in RSS feeds too. I will be posting a RSS feed to subscribe to my Kannada blog posts separately.

Thanks to Simply Exclude Plugin which made it happen in couple of minutes.  Here is a screen shot of Simply Excludes interface.

If I have to deliberately override this (;)) there is an option for that too ..

Upgrade to WordPress 2.8.4

There have been couple of security updates to WordPress recently and here comes an another one….

WordPress 2.8.4: Security Release

Posted August 12, 2009 by Matt. Filed under Releases, Security.

Yesterday a vulnerability was discovered: a specially crafted URL could be requested that would allow an attacker to bypass a security check to verify a user requested a password reset. As a result, the first account without a key in the database (usually the admin account) would have its password reset and a new password would be emailed to the account owner. This doesn’t allow remote access, but it is very annoying.

We fixed this problem last night and have been testing the fixes and looking for other problems since then. Version 2.8.4 which fixes all known problems is now available for download and is highly recommended for all users of WordPress.

This release also fixed the theme issue which I had with my admin interface. Entire wp-admin section used to display in white color and I was also unable to use the options ajax based option menus etc.

Thanks for the update guys!

WordPress: Automatic upgrade fails with time-out

While upgrading WordPress and its plug-ins using Automatic Upgrade plug-in, many times we might get the following time-out errors.

Error: Download failed.: Connection time-out

There are two reasons for this error to bail-out:

First one is a DNS issue. Check the resolver of your server and ensure that the first dns server listed there is responding quite fast. If your ping command takes too long to answer, then rotate the nameservers.

Second one could be php/apache script time out limit set on the server. This can be modified by editing configuration files.

Look at the first reason, in this case any application that tries to download a file from net will take too long to respond back if there is a DNS issue. WordPress can wait for some time to get the files and then it will time-out. If you’re aware of the DNS issue you can edit configuration file to get the issue fixed. Otherwise you can tell wordpress to wait for some more time.  Let us see how that could be done.

I edited following line in wp-admin/includes/file.php

$response = wp_remote_get($url, array('timeout' => 60));

Default time-out was set to 30 earlier. It has been set to 60 now. This will make my wordpress wait for 30 more seconds to get the response.

Have you got any other fix for this? Share it..

Wandering around Drupal 6.0

I had tried to work on Drupal even before jumping into WordPress for my blog. But never got it working as per my requirement due to time constraints. At last, I have made an another attempt to install drupal 6.0 on a subdomain of mine to see how I could get most out of it. Installation is quite simple. Worked with roles etc. Still there is lot more to hack. Here is how my test drupal installation looks.

I shall keep you all posted about my wanderings around drupal here at platonic.

Run away from WordPress Flash upload issue

I was unable to upload files via FlashUpload option in WordPress for quite some time now. It started happening after Adobe Flash 10 upgrade. I didn’t bothered much as there was an alternative right there on the screen. Today I got bit irritated thinking of one extra task required to get the work done. To eliminate this step, I immediately started digging for a fix at once. Solutions were right there on WordPress forum. All I had to do is to download SWFUpload, extract it, and upload swfupload.swf in wp-includes/js/swfupload/ thats it. While I was applying this fix, I could see that WordPress 7 had swfupload_f9.swf which was supported only by Flash 9. Okay, you’re done with it. Now start uploading the files with no issues.

Expecting this issue to be sorted out in upcoming version of WordPress.
